Frequently Asked Questions About Asbestos

  • What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a silicate mineral made up of thin fibrous crystals that can be released by rubbing or abrasive action and other processes. Asbestos is usually referred to by its colour. The following three are the common types of asbestos found in Australia: • Chrysolite or White Asbestos • Amosite or Brown Asbestos • Crocidolite or Blue Asbestos Asbestos was heavily used in the building & construction industry due to its properties of fire retardness, sound absorption, tensile strength, cost effectiveness and its resistance to chemical, heat and electrical damage.
  • Where is asbestos used?
Non-friable asbestos (or bonded asbestos) used to be commonly used in roofing sheets and roof capping, wall sheeting and interior & exterior cladding, soffits, eaves, guttering for water, gables, flues and water pipes. It was also used for garages, carports, sheds and fences. Asbestos was also used in car brake pads and plant machinery. Friable asbestos (or loosely bound materials) was used in asbestos felt materials manufactured for fire proofing, sound proofing, for lagging pipes and in insulation around stoves, heaters and hot water systems. Asbestos felt was also used as a backing material for some vinyl flooring and linoleum. This can be a serious health risk if the vinyl or lino is taken up, as the asbestos fibres can very easily become airborne.
  • Who can remove asbestos?
Any materials containing asbestos must only be removed and handled by a professional and licensed removalist due to the serious health risks which can occur by asbestos airborne particles.
  • What aged buildings are likely to have asbestos?
If a building was built before 1985 it is highly likely that it will contain some form of asbestos material. If the property was built between 1985 and 1990, it is quite likely to contain some of the mineral. If it was built after 1990 the building is unlikely to contain any asbestos material.
  • What are typical asbestos products?
    • ACM sheets utilised in construction • Thermal insulation and lagging • Roof sheets • Fence sheets • Pipes and downpipes • Low density board and ceiling tiles • Brake pads and housings • Acoustic ceilings
